The first post on the front page of the Oklahoma Social Media Club looks a bit like this:
Welcome to the Oklahoma Social Media Club. You are most likely here as a result of the facebook page I created, my blog , tweet or a personal invite from me, Bill Handy. All the communication tools used are part of the social media phenomenon that is sweeping the world.
I can't remember a time when a club was created for a tactic, which leads me to believe there is much more to social media than being part of a pr or marketing strategy (or a cool way to stay in contact with friends). Best practices are yet to be determined (although my wife says I shouldn't tweet in public), case studies are just now being written, experimentation is taking place every day and new tools are coming at us faster then ever before.
My plan for this club is simple:
Daily - Members updating, providing links, promoting their blogs, tweeting, posting videos, asking questions, debating answers and more.
Monthly - Monthly meetings in different locations - Stillwater, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Norman and beyond. I hope the member of this group will come from all over the state and, as such, we should meet all over the state. If you can be there in person, great. If not, we will do our best to broadcast them live or recorded, using social media technology so you can be part of the meeting.
Yearly - A social media seminar with some of the greatest minds in the industry (professional and academic) once a year.
For both monthly and the yearly meeting, I have a short list of social media experts which I want to invite (some even live in Oklahoma) for all us to meet and listen to
Until we reach one hundred members this will sit mostly dormant along with all the possibilities. When we hit that mark you will receive an email letting you know the group is alive and where the first meeting will be.
While we are on the topic of members, I am looking for site sponsors (see the ads on the right side? We can get rid of those and replace them with a nice logo of your choice). Contact me for more information.
Students wishing to help can also get resume kudos. Contact me for more information.
Developers and graphic design folks who want to help enhance this site... yep, please contact me
I look forward to being social with all of you.
Is this a place where an absolute dinosaur can escape extinction? I just really don't "get" social media -- but I'm told I'd better learn.
